Will Paul Mashatile & Gwede Mantashe make it on #CR17 Top 6?

WITH ANC branch nominations for leadership positions starting in a few days’ time, one presidential campaign whose supporters have already begun publicly debating the names for nomination is Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s campaign, otherwise known as CR17 #Siyavuma.

Circulating on social media are several proposed names but most contentious was Chairperson of Gauteng Paul Mashatile whose name was vehemently turned down by some in the discussion. A suggestion in one proposal that Joel Netshitenzhe replace Senzo Mchunu as secretary general was met with near rebellion.

“CR 17 Top 6 Line Up is as follows”, one proposal read:
“1. President : Cyril Ramaphosa
2.Deputy President :Lindiwe Sisulu
3. National Chairperson :Gwede Mantashe
4. Secretary General: Senzo Mchunu
5.Deputy Secretary : Febe Portgieter-Gqubule (pronounced as Fibhi)
6.Treasurer General : Paul Mashatile”

In another proposal, which brought some angst from the women in the debate, Sisulu comes in Number 5 as deputy secretary. The women felt they were being undermined. Sisulu’s name doesn’t come as a surprise. It was suggested by some, from as early as the launch of her announcement that she too would be contesting the race, that she would later join forces with Ramaphosa.

1. President : Cyril Ramaphosa
2.Deputy President :Zweli Mkhize
3. National Chairperson :Thandi Modise
4. Secretary General: Senzo Mchunu
5.Deputy Secretary : Lindiwe Sisulu
6.Treasurer General : Paul Mashatile or DD Mabuza

The campaign for the other front-runner in the ANC presidential race, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has not given anything away on issues of the leaders with whom she will be running. Her campaign: #NDZ #WeAreReady #RadicalEconomicTransformationNowOrNever.

While Matthews Phosa, another name mentioned in the race, has campaigned here and there, Baleka Mbete, whose name is also mentioned, has hardly made a showing in as far as campaigning is concerned.

Earlier in the year the ANC announced it would cut regions and provinces from the electoral process in an attempt to tighten the process and ensure that there’s no tampering with the nominations and creating slates.

The ANC said branches would make their selection and their nominations would be sealed in envelopes and sent to the national electoral commission. As I’ve said here before, the slates have long been created.

  1. What is sad is that these are just list of names. What exactly do these people stand for. What vision do they have for this country?

The worst mistake we can do is fall in love with politicians.

  3. First proposal would be the weakest top 6 ever..Paul Mashatile?? Sisulu?? Mchunu?? as for Gwede we know under his stewardship the ANC is at its weakest

    1. Paul & Mcunu can go sell icecream on bicycles.
SG Mantashe will be fine as chairperson, that’s my view even thou the chances of this slate is zero even thou miracles do happen.
