Will Hlengiwe Mkhize Address #FeesMustFall With Urgency It Deserves?

Blade Nzimande – OUT

The #FeesMustFall movement has been very low key this year with rumours that protests could start towards exam time. Could the latest cabinet reshuffle replacing now former Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande with Hlengiwe Mkhize, address the problem with the urgency it requires. There’s been mention of an increase of between 8 and 13% in university fees for 2018 which will see many children, Black in the main, remain on the side lines of tertiary education.

Here is the Presidency Statement of a few minutes ago….

After careful consideration, I have decided to make the following changes to the National Executive;
1 Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize is the Minister of Higher Education and Training
2 Ms Ayanda Dlodlo is the Minister of Home Affairs
3 Ms Mmamaloko Kubayi is the Minister of Communications
4 Mr David Mahlobo is the Minister of Energy
5 Adv. Bongani Thomas Bongo is the Minister of State Security
6 Mr Buti Manamela is the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training

I thank the former members of the National Executive for good service in their previous portfolios.

I wish the members who are assuming new portfolios all the best in their new responsibilities.

  1. The DG saga can be resolved by Newly appointed Minister,while the outgoing Minister remains accountable for her decision.

    DGs in diffrent ministries are selected by individual relevant Ministers, as DGs are assistant to the Minister. Yes the President is informed about these appointments & removal,purely for the purpose of protocol & nothing further.

    In this case the matter has been refered for review, letwait & see the outcome. We will soon get to know the reasons for the suspension & able to comment……

  2. Now what does this mean to Suspended DG now that Hlengiwe is no longer there also after rumours that the president supported his suspension
