The African People’s Convention (APC) mourns the passing of Mama Zondeni Veronica Sobukwe. She, like her husband Mangaliso Robert Sobukwe, served, suffered and sacrificed. She was 91 years old. On behalf of the Central Executive Committee, the entire APC membership and the people of Azania, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of u-mama Sobukwe and the Hlathi, Jambase clan.
Mama Sobukwe did not receive the limelight, as the mother of the nation, but her husband’s proposed solutions and teachings are widely absorbed in theAfricanist perspective. His Africanist and revolutionary ideas still resonates among Revolutionaries and intellectuals alike around the African continent, the diaspora, and the entire world.
Thus the regime cowed even after umama Sobukwe had told them: “I am worried about the health of my husband Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe. When I visited him on Robben Island in in January I saw that his health had deteriorated. I know his health better than anyone else.”
Umama wrote the letter to then Minister of JusticeBJ Vorsternin Januar 1966.
Her contribution to the liberation struggle remained unquestionable. She was a selfless servant and shining example to the African people, especially the womenfolk. Mama pass our greetings to Tata Sobukwe, Mothopeng, Pokela, Urbania Mothopeng, etc, and tell them that the land of theAfrican people has not yet returned to its rightful owners, tell them that the majority of our people still live in squalor, poverty, inequality and social degradation.
Mama Sobukwe has been a fantastic role model for all those seeking to understand how to make an impact with their life. We thank the Almighty for keeping her until her last day on earth.
Let the Spirit of Mama Sobukwe rest in peace.
Yours for an Africanist cause
